What’s New on HBO Max in December 2020

When Warner Bros. announced that Wonder Woman 1984 would forgo an exclusive theatrical engagement this winter and premier on the streaming service HBO Max even as it played in the handful of theaters that haven’t been shuttered by the raging pandemic, it marked some sort of turning point. After this, going to the movies might never be the same.

Sure, I’m excited to catch Patty Jenkins’ sequel to her 2o17 superhero blockbuster ASAP, and as much as I’d like that to happen on a huge screen in a theater, well… no thanks. I will watch it from my couch soon after its Dec. 25 streaming release—it will be available on HBO Max for just 31 days—and with mixed feelings, made only more so by the recent announcement that this same pattern will repeat for Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 film slate. It’s depressing to imagine seeing, say, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune on a laptop, or not ugly crying in public while watching John Chu’s adaptation of Lin- Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights.

That said, it’s certainly a boon for HBO Max subscribers. I’ve already argued that it’s one of the best streaming services for movie fans, and next year, it will be near-essential. Even looking beyond this month’s big blockbuster debut, for example, the streamer is adding a great mix of classic and recent films, original premieres, and episodic television. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now is the time.
